Crowns and Bridges

Occasionally your may have become too damaged to restore with a filling, in that case you may need a “dental crown”, it is also called a “cap” colloquially.

A dental crown is a tooth shaped restoration that sits over your tooth, covering it completely, right down to the gum line. It acts like a suit of armour against chewing forces, protecting the tooth underneath and improving its appearance; giving it back the size, shape and colour to allow you to chew properly and with confidence.

At Langley Dental Clinic & Implant Centre, we offer a full range of material for your crowns depending on clinical need and of course, your personal preference. We also offer CEREC crowns which are made from ceramic in a process which just takes one hour.

The main benefits of dental crowns are:

  • Protection of weak tooth structure from further failure
  • Improve the appearance of the tooth

A dental bridge is a one way to replace a missing tooth or teeth. It comprises of a bridge unit (what holds your new teeth together), pontics (the artificial tooth that replaces your missing tooth), and dental crowns (anchoring the bridge).

A dental bridge is a fixed option, which means that it is cemented or bonded to your own teeth, so it is unable to be removed unlike a denture. Dental bridges literally bridge the gap created by one or more missing teeth. A lot of the information about crowns is very relevant here since a bridge is two crowns for the teeth either side, attached together via a fake tooth in the middle. There are many different types of bridges, that can be utilized for different situations. Your dentist will explain each one and if it is a viable option for you.

The main benefits of dental bridges are:

  • Restore biting function to the area
  • Prevent or minimize teeth movement (as when you lose a tooth, usually teeth tend to move into the gap)
  • Improve appearance of the teeth and smile
